The WWN is a factory-set parameter that cannot be changed by the end user. Switch WWN identifiers are a 64-bit number that has eight colon-separated fields each consisting of one or two hexadecimal digits between 0 and ff. On the surface a WWN identifier may not look very useful, but broken down into its component parts, more information is available. In cases where devices are not assigned a custom name in TPC or in the device's SMI-S provider, it may be the only way to identify devices. SAN-connected devices are identified by a unique identifier, known as the WWN (or world wide name).
